Francisco Nunez | Hal Leonard Francisco Nunez Francisco J. Núñez, a recipient of a 2011 MacArthur Fellowship presented to individuals for their “exceptional originality in & dedication to their creative pursuits,” is the artistic director of the Young People’s Chorus of New York City™, a composer, conductor, visionary, & leading figure in music education. In 1988 he founded YPC to provide children of all ethnic, religious, & economic backgrounds with a safe haven for personal and artistic growth & to date has changed the lives of thousands of young people. YPC is widely recognized for its exceptional caliber and has been cited as a model of artistic excellence and diversity by the President’s Committee on the Arts & the Humanities under the Clinton, Bush, and Obama administrations. Visit www.ypc.org Mr. Núñez also leads University Glee Club of New York City and was the director of choral activities at NYU from 2003 to 2010.  As a composer, Mr. Núñez won early acclaim for seamlessly fusing a wide gamut of cultures and musical idioms, writing his first choral work, Misa Pequeña, at age 15. Today, he composes countless compositions & arrangements in all musical formats and styles, which are published by Boosey & Hawkes.  With the creation of his Transient Glory® commissioning series of concerts, recordings, symposia, and publications, Mr. Núñez has greatly expanded the repertoire of choral music for young people with more than 60 works by today’s most distinguished composers. In association with Chester Novello and G Schirmer, the Transient Glory® compositions are being published by Boosey & Hawkes, where Mr. Núñez is an editor, so that other choruses worldwide can have access to this challenging music. He recently extended Transient Glory® to Radio Radiance™, a radio, digital media and internet program, presented in partnership with WNYC New York Public Radio and American Public Media, to develop new audiences for cutting-edge choral music. Francisco Núñez grew up in close-knit Dominican family in New York City’s Washington Heights. After he graduated from NYU as a piano performance major, he formed the Young People’s Chorus of New York City™, bringing children from underserved neighborhoods together with children from more privileged circumstances. With music as the equalizer, the diversity in the group resulted in new vocal colors and a confident urban style, creating not only a vibrant new choral sound, but also an avenue for children to succeed. As an authority on the subject, he is often invited to give keynote addresses at choral symposia & conferences across the country. Mr. Núñez is the recipient of numerous awards, including an ASCAP Concert Music Award, a New York Choral Society’s Choral Excellence Award, & a Liberty Award from the New York Post. Hispanic Business magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential Hispanics of 2005; GMC’s national campaign hailed him as an unsung Hispanic hero; and La Sociedad Coral Latinoamericana honored him as its 2009 Man of the Year. Mr. Núñez makes his home in New York with his wife Elizabeth Núñez, a YPC conductor; their son Sebastián; and two Italian greyhounds Coda and Dixie. For more information, visit franciscojnunez.com and www.macfound.org.

Lee Evans | Hal Leonard Lee Evans Lee Evans as a professional artist has blended the performance of classical music and jazz in a highly successful manner. His piano concepts and techniques have drawn considerable praise from audiences and fellow musicians worldwide. Evans started private piano lessons at age five. He graduated from New York's High School of Music & Art, then completed degrees at New York University and Columbia University, receiving his Master of Arts and Doctor of Education from the latter. Dr. Evans has taught at the junior high, high school and college levels. He is former Chair of the Performing Arts Deparment at New York City's Pace University. Professionally, he performs with his orchestra and has acted as pianist and music coordinator for such performers as Tom Jones, Englebert Humperdinck, Carol Channing, Cat Stevens, Emerson Lake & Palmer and others. Evans strongly believes that keyboard jazz can be taught with the same authenticity and skill as traditional classical teaching. His books have succeeded in bringing to keyboard students and teachers an understanding of and feeling for jazz. His jazz series is an outgrowth of his belief that jazz can be broken down into identifiable elements and taught in a methodical, sequential manner completely compatible with classical teaching methods. At his informative and entertaining workshops, Dr. Evans explains the inner workings of jazz in illuminating detail. He demonstrates his recommended procedure for teaching jazz elements and improvisation within the classical lesson, as well as discusses the use of jazz materials for the teaching of technique and sight reading. In the process, teachers become acquainted with a wide variety of beginning, intermediate and advanced keyboard jazz repertoire and method books. Teachers attending these workshops learn how to motivate pupils with new easty-to-learn techniques and materials that teach creative musicianship--composing, notating music, harmonizing, transposing, etc. A common theme expressed by teachers who have heard Dr. Evans' workshops is that his seminars generate a renewed enthusiasm for teaching, and his methods and materials result in motivated students. Hal Leonard Vocal Competition - 2017 Winners | Hal Leonard THE 2017 HAL LEONARD VOCAL COMPETITION WINNERS Hal Leonard, the world's largest print music publisher and the world leader in vocal music, launched the exciting and innovative concept of a serious music competition for voice students comprised entirely of YouTube video entries. We believe this to be the first legitimate music competition for musicians of various ages, children through college, to be held entirely on the Internet. The required repertoire was largely drawn from art song and musical theatre literature. The deadline for entry was February 1, 2017. Judging has been concluded, and we are pleased to announce the art song and musical theatre results in the four age categories of competition. Congratulations to the prize winners! We were encouraged by the commitment and seriousness of purpose shown in the video entries. If these are a representative sampling, there are clearly many dedicated students and teachers at all levels who have embraced our heritage of music literature. We thank all those who entered for confirming that this experimental venture was more than worthwhile. And we also thank the teachers and parents who guided the voice students in this competition. Thank you also to all the accompanists for their key participation.
